The BBC is proud to introduce our initial recruiting combine which will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2011 in Houston, Texas. This combine is the product of over five years of research, interviews and experience with the process of collegiate basketball recruiting. Our goal is to ensure that players and parents have the information, direction, exposure opportunities, web tools and resources that they need to take their recruiting project to the next level!

The Synergy of Web Tools and BBC Combines

In conjunction with the combine, we are also releasing new tools for players, coaches and to support the combine skill metrics.  We are merging the latest technology and focused basketball combines to produce products that meet the recruiting needs of players, parents and coaches. The idea is to collect essential basketball data, skill metrics and competition electronically and empower players and parents to place it all at the fingertips of college coaches. We help players to effectively expose themselves to the world and then show them how to motivate coaches, scouts and fans to “follow” their progress. Welcome to 21st century recruiting!

Several new and updated recruiting tools for players will be unveiled at the combine. These include a College Locater, a Core Course Tracking System, BBC Social Link, and the latest updates to the See Me Play tool. New tools for college coaches will enable easy player location, research and tracking.

Bringing Value To the Recruiting Process

We do not stutter when we say that BBC membership and combines are simply the best values in recruiting!  Our core staff consists of parents who are driven to help other parents and players.  Our mission is to help players elevate their exposure, prepare for college and get recruited!   We have been there!  We understand the challenges and stress of the recruiting process!

We have designed these combines so that after one focused day players will have what they need to take control and manage a successful recruiting project.  Families could spend hundreds or much more, to have a professional recruiting service do this, or they can attend a BBC Combine and learn the secrets, get the tools, and take control of the process with confidence.

The NCAA has been trying to get under-handed practices of some summer-ball programs under control for some time now with limited success.  However, the NCAA is not giving up. The rule passed to eliminate the spring evaluation period for Division I men basketball coaches rocked the landscape of non-scholastic events held in the Spring. The summer evaluation period (July) will be next on the chopping block. Does this mean that D1 coaches will no longer evaluate players in the spring and summer? Well, coaches would not stand for that so the NCAA has a plan. It’s called “iHoops”!

Money, Recruiting and Sharks

OK, let’s put all the cards on the table. NCAA Division I Basketball is BIG business. We are talking multi-millions of dollars. If you want to make a high 6 or7-digit salary as a collegiate basketball coach, you’ve got to win consistently at the highest level. To win at the highest level, you HAVE TO recruit the best college-eligible players and convince them to sign and play at your school. In order to keep or acquire such salaries along with notoriety, product endorsements, movie deals and other perks, some coaches will shell out lots of cash to get the big fish. Where there is money flowing, the sharks will smell it and pursue it aggressively.

This may be over simplified, but money IS flowing, rules are being broken, and principles are people who run somebody’s school.      The NCAA does not like it so it intends to have coaches only evaluate at scholastic events AND at events that THEY control!

It is more than likely, in my opinion, that this July will be the last NCAA evaluation period for non-scholastic events that Division I men basketball coaches can attend!   If you can read the tea leaves, you will recognize that this is a done deal. Here is what the NCAA has written (January 2011) to event operators who seek MCAA sanction for their events.  [Read more...]

The BBC has released a redesigned basketball game chart.  The new design now features a portrait layout, a legend area and can be created with a “College’ or ‘High School/Middle School’ court diagram.  The charts are also pre-aligned for printing on 3-hole punch paper stock.  Game charts are now produced in the PDF format, and can be instantly emailed to you or directly to the person who will be charting your game (if necessary).

The BBC is excited about releasing these improved charts for our member players as we continue to find new ways to help you to elevate your exposure, prepare for college and get recruited.  Watch for the release of other new features of See Me Play over the next couple of weeks!

If you want to give Jr. (my term for your BB player) an edge in recruiting, you need to utilize player development resources and effectively market Jr. to college coaches. "Charting" used with "See Me Play!" (SMP) from The BBC is a cost-effective and easy way to do both.  Charting a game allows you to quickly gather stats, provide your player with a development resource and also helps keep official scorers honest. Totals from a game chart can be added to SMP and published to the world in seconds!

In this article I will share how easy it is to “chart” a player by reviewing a game chart that I made for Carl Culberson (St. Pius X HS, Class of 2012,  Houston, TX) for his St. Pius vs. St. John’s game on December 7, 2010.  So, let's get started with some charting basics.

One of he biggest mistakes that parents and their players make is a failure to adequately plan for the future.  Here is an old truism; “A failure to plan IS a plan to fail!”.  Here is some good news for high school students’ help is available for you in the form of a test called PLAN.

PLAN is a pre-ACT test that is usually administered in the fall of a student’s sophomore year. Here is a tip from The Dad:  Do NOT view PLAN as a pass/fail test!  The PLAN program is “a friend” that helps you to prepare for whatever you will do after high school!

There are many benefits of the PLAN program.  The BBC highly recommends that you take the PLAN test and that you review the PLAN Report with your school counselor or other qualified academic/career specialist.

After you take the PLAN test, you will receive a report like this. The report contains scores and suggested actions for each category.  This information is valuable.  However, YOU must do something with it to receive the benefits!

If your school does not administer PLAN, find a school that will allow you to take the test.  The optimal time to take the PLAN test is early in your sophomore year.

What Your PLAN Score Report Tells YOU

The PLAN Student Score Report contains a lot of information about your skills, interests, plans, and goals.

You can use this information to:

  • make sure your remaining high school courses are the best ones possible to prepare you for college
  • help you consider your options for after high school

Wow!  Here is a resource that will motivate Jr. (my term for your BB player) to think about his/her future! PLAN even provides suggested courses of action to prepare for college or whatever is in your future.  This is a no-brainer.  OK everybody, let’s get with the PLAN!

Here are some of the benefits of PLAN (just in case you did not click the link above)

·         Predicts level of success on the ACT test

·         Helps you to select HS courses

·         Helps you to prepare for future academic testing

·         Stimulates thinking and planning for life after HS

Did you know?

·         Participation in the PLAN program could lead to academic recruiting and scholarship offers

·          Colleges actively seek out students who are “planning” for college

·          Participation in PLAN enhances your recruitibility for some college coaches.

The Five Year Plan

According to ex-college coach and current NIKE executive George Raveling in his State-of-Recruiting address from a couple of years ago, every future college student needs to develop a five-year plan. You can find out what the components of the five-year-plan include by viewing Part 2 of this video You can view all six parrs of the address here  Be sure to have your notebook in hand.

Here is an excerprt from this article...

There are Lots of Fish in the Sea

Do not be discouraged by the lack of D1 offers. There are actually MORE scholarship and playing opportunities out there than you may be aware of. There are roughly 600 D1 scholarships awarded to high school seniors each year in the USA.   In addition to available D1 scholarships, there are over 2,000 full and partial athletic scholarships offered by the 300+ NCAA D2, 200+ NAIA, 60+ USCAA.  and 500+ NJCAA colleges each year! In addition, many Division III and independent schools offer various types of financial aid to student/athletes.

Hey, there is a lot of money out there! Many players do not pursue it because of pride (“…my "dogs" are goin' D1”), ignorance and depression.  While Junior may be home crying, a less skilled player reels in the opportunity that could belong to Junior.

I loved to fish when I was in college   I vividly remember those days when I was impatient and went home early empty handed; only to discover that others who persevered, caught lots of fish! Preparation, patience and persistence are key if you want to catch a college.

The TAPS 5A first round playoff matchup between Dallas Bishop Dunne (24-11) and Houston St. Thomas (25-13) was a David versus Goliath affair, however, David apparently left his slingshot back in Dallas.. St. Thomas’ starting front court boasted a five inch height advantage and Dunne was pestered by the giants the entire game.

This morning, I read numerous rants on the chron.com discussion forum lamenting the lack of HS basketball coverage by The Houston Chronicle or anywhere else for that matter.  The only decent coverage mentioned was the great job done by RCSSports.com.  The Houston area knows about the exploits of the Jack Yates Lions, but there are lots of great basketball teams and players in Greater Houston.  Houston may just have more BB talent than any other metropolitan area in the U.S.  Just take a look at the number of D1 scholarships awarded to Houston area athletes.  Just look up and down the roster of Texas, the #1 college team in the land (well, maybe #2 after last night’s loss to Kansas State) and name another ranked team with as many players from one area!

The BBC Game of the Week

The BBC has decided to help this situation just a bit (others will also have to step up!).  Beginning in about one week, we will feature the BBC Game of the Week on our home page.  We will have video highlights, stats, a game article and allow you, the fans, to discuss and comment online.  Admittedly, this will not expose the vast majority of players in the city, but it will help a little.  Perhaps it will give some kid the exposure he/she needs to make a difference.

After we get this project started, we may allow the community to vote on which game will be featured.  If you have questions, comments or ideas, just make an entry in the comment area below.
